Used for a variety of medical disorders ranging from liver problems, digestive ailments, and urinary tract disorders to nausea and insomnia. It has been recommended for epilepsy. Used for centuries for nervous conditions and has been traditionally used for sleeplessness, epilepsy, nervousness, hysteria and as a diuretic. Valerian is used to combat sleeping disorders, restlessness, anxiety, and as a muscle relaxant. Valerian often seems to work when taken over longer periods (several weeks), though many users find that it takes effect immediately. Also used traditionally to treat gastrointestinal pain and irritable bowel syndrome.
